Star Trek Into Darkness, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Benedict Cumberbatch is reportedly tracking to have a $100+ million opening weekend, despite solid competition.

It seems moviegoers are ready for something new as director J.J. Abram’s sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, is headed for a fairly decent opening weekend. With Iron Man 3 gobbling up its massive box office in its first two weekends, then slowly starting to fizzle out in theaters, Star Trek’s sequel is coming in at the perfect time to fill the void.

The Wrap is reporting that the film is tracking to have an opening weekend box office of $100 million or more, which would put it at around $30 million more than director J.J. Abrams first Star Trek film, which hit theaters back in 2009 and pulled in $75.2 million on its opening weekend. That film would go on to bring in a total of $385 million worldwide, but with international superstar Benedict Cumberbatch playing the main villain in this sequel, we imagine the foreign box office will definitely see an increase this time around.

Paramount has chosen to release Star Trek Into Darkness in 336 Imax 3D theaters Wednesday, a day ahead of its nationwide release in more than 3,800 theaters. The studio also pushed the film’s U.S. release date up one day to May 16, instead of its original May 17 release date. The film’s latest promotional featurette focused on director J.J. Abrams, along with how he’s planning on dealing with helming the Star Wars franchise in the next few years.

While Star Trek Into Darkness shouldn’t break any box office records this weekend, it definitely has audience’s attention, and we look forward to seeing Kirk, Spock, and Khan…we mean John in the film this weekend.

Star Trek Into Darkness’ release date is set for May 16, 2013. The film will hit IMAX theaters a day earlier, and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Alice Eve, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood and Peter Weller.
