Paramount has revealed the first official synopsis for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness, just two weeks in advance of the trailer debut.

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man (Benedict Cumberbatch) weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The first thing of note is that there still isn’t any official word on who Cumberbatch’s character is. Speculation continues to run rampant, although it looks like Paramount is holding this bit of information for as long as possible.

Perhaps we’ll have more answers come December 14, when the trailer debuts in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Audiences who take in the film in IMAX will be treated to nine minutes of footage from the film. Whether the footage will show fully-fleshed out scenes or play as an extended trailer remains to be seen.

Directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (who wrote the first film), Star Trek Into Darkness, which is set for a May 17, 2013 release, reunites 2009’s Star Trek cast of Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Simon Pegg and Karl Urban, as well as newcomers Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, Noel Clarke, and Peter Weller.
