According to a press release sent over by Paramount, fans will be able to catch nine minutes of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness in IMAX 3D starting December 14 in front of The Hobbit.

From the press release:

“Paramount Pictures will release the first 9 minutes from J.J. Abrams’ eagerly-awaited “Star Trek Into Darkness” exclusively in IMAX 3D months prior to the film’s official release in May 2013. This first-look at the movie will play in approximately 500 digital IMAX 3D theatres beginning December 14th.”

As of yet there hasn’t been any official material released for the highly-anticipated sequel to 2009’s Star Trek, unless you’re counting a short, two-second clip that Abrams jokingly released – and we’re not. Star Trek Into Darkness reunites Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho and Anton Yelchin, while adding Benedict Cumberbatch as the film’s villain.

“Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “Their use of the IMAX Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we’re thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster.”

What the footage will actually include remains to be seen, although with a whole nine minutes we can assume it will be more than just a tease. As you may remember, a similar tactic was employed by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises when it debuted IMAX footage in front of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Paramount is obviously banking on this strategy being just as successful, as seats will surely fill for The Hobbit in IMAX.

Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters on May 17th, 2013; The Hobbit arrives in theaters with the footage on December 14, 2012.
