Star Trek: Discovery season 2 has a new trailer, new poster, and the same global message — fight for the future.

“There is a great responsibility at hand, this could be the defining moment for multiple civilizations, millions of lives…” And welcome aboard, Spock!

Ethan Peck, who will be taking on the role in Star Trek: Discovery‘s second season, opens the trailer by setting a grave tone. The crew of Discovery are now assisting the Enterprise in investigating mysterious red bursts that, as Captain Pike confirms, bring about the Red Angel.

Spock, who spent most of the New York Comic Con footage in danger or asleep, is at least coherent enough here to reveal that the Red Angel showed him a vision of an apocalyptic future. One that, no doubt, the Starfleet teams will fight to prevent.

But does the fact that this takes place within the Prime timeline lower the stakes? Spock survives, Pike goes on to lead Kirk, and Harry Mudd continues his romp as a space pirate. That’s the beauty of what Discovery has already shown us in season 1.

Crew members (not just red shirts) can die. Multiple universes exist and travel between them is possible. Michael Burnham, Saru, and Ash Tyler can go at any moment. Redemption is going to play into this season for more than one character. Who’s to say that redemption will come without sacrifice?

Ok, that’s enough recap and brief analysis. Let’s start screaming about the important highlights!
