Star Trek: Discovery will not hit CBS All Access until at least May 2017, the streaming service and producers announced today.

Bad news Star Trek fans. You’ll have to wait a bit longer to head out on the USS Discovery. Originally slated for a January 2017 launch, the series will now begin in May 2017.

Bryan Fuller’s hands are rather full with American Gods production in full swing and thus Discovery will see a delay in production. The decision was delivered today from CBS All Access, taking a “better late than wrong” approach.

Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, both producers on the show, issued the following statement:

Bringing Star Trek back to television carries a responsibility and mission: to connect fans and newcomers alike to the series that has fed our imaginations since childhood. We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space, and the need to meet an air date, don’t result in compromised quality. Before heading into production, we evaluated these realities with our partners at CBS and they agreed: Star Trek deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of.

Legions of fans are eager to get their hands on new content, especially some that will feature new characters, missions, and ships. This deflates our excitement a bit, but ultimately the decision to delay production is for the greater good.

It is wise on the part of both Fuller and CBS to give the production the time and attention it needs to get things right. With all the advancements in CGI and post-production effects, the show will benefit from a few extra months cooking in the booth.
