Star Trek’s expansion leaps beyond CBS All Access, announcing that a new animated series for a teen audience will premiere on Nickelodeon.

A second animated series is currently in development for the ever-growing Star Trek franchise. The series is described as expanding the “universe for a new generation of fans. The new original CG-animated series follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation.”

Sign. Us. Up.

The series comes to us from Dan and Kevin Hageman, the brothers who have previously penned Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, LEGO’s Ninjago series for Nickelodeon as well as the story for The LEGO Movie.

Under the helm of Alex Kurtzman, this series will join the previously announced Lower Decks animated show for CBS All Access, the currently streaming Discovery, the untitled Picard series, and the announced Michelle Yeoh, Discovery spinoff.

“Star Trek’s mission is to inspire generations of dreamers to build a brighter future,” Kurtzman said. “Dan and Kevin have crafted a story that honors its exploratory spirit in a way that’s never been done before, while the Nickelodeon team blew us away with their excitement at bringing Trek to a younger generation around the world.”

With so many Trek series to choose from, the space risks becoming too diluted with new material. However, the demographic shift with the latest series, plus expanding the universe with fresh stories as well as revisiting some familiar faces, seems to strike a nice balance. All of this said, we only have one series currently available.

Star Trek: Discovery was recently renewed for a third season at CBS All Access and is currently available to stream on CBS All Access and Netflix outside of the United States.
