Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writers of J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek, and two of the three writers on Star Trek Into Darkness, have been confirmed to be returning to write Star Trek 3.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are close to finalizing a deal to return to write Star Trek 3. With J.J. Abrams likely unable to direct due to being tied up with Star Wars: Episode VII, having the Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness writers on board will leave the series with some stability.
Along with Kurtzman and Orci, Star Trek Into Darkness was also written by Damon Lindelof, but at the current time, sources close to the project say Lindelof will not be back for Star Trek 3.
While some will argue that it’s good that Kurtzman and Orci return to the series to keep some continuity, others will argue that one of the biggest weaknesses of Star Trek Into Darkness was the script. A common complaint was that the film was too close in story to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
These complaints were particularly loud from Star Trek fans. They’ve often claimed that the Star Trek reboots haven’t been in the Star Trek spirit. They’ve said that the current films are directed towards the general audience, not them, the lifelong fans. They’re right, but nothing will change that.
