After Roberto Orci departed Star Trek 3 as director, Paramount now has a short list of five directors they wish to move forward with.

Star Trek 3’s production has struggled a bit after J.J. Abrams moved on to direct the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, whose trailer landed recently, but then director Roberto Orci signed on to helm the project. Last week we found out Orci had left the project, which left the director’s seat wide open.

Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures are looking at five directors to replace Orci as the director of Star Trek 3. Paramount reportedly met with Rupert Wyatt, who recently directed Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and also directed Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming film The Gambler. Wyatt is supposedly at the top of this five-person list, but he certainly isn’t alone according to new reports.

The Imitation Game’s director, Morten Tyldum, is also in the running to direct Star Trek 3, as well as Daniel Espinosa, Justin Lin, and Source Code director Duncan Jones. Edgar Wright’s name was also thrown in the mix in earlier reports, but he’s not mentioned in the new report.

It’s unknown as to whether Star Trek 3 will be delayed due to Roberto Orci’s recent departure, but this news makes us think they’re planning on keeping the schedule if they can land the right director.

Not much was known about Star Trek 3 prior to Orci’s departure, but he was working on a script with Patrick McKay and John D. Payne. There were reports that this sequel would see the Enterprise crew go much deeper into space than the first two films and that William Shatner would have a role in the film.

We’re certainly fans of a few of the top five directors, and while we’re concerned about the film staying on schedule, we’re glad to see Paramount making progress and moving forward after the loss of two excellent directors.
