It has been announced via press release that J.J. Abrams will release Star Trek 2 in IMAX 3D format, with “key scenes” filmed using IMAX cameras. The film will be post-converted to incorporate 3D. More information after the jump.

Said Abrams about the decision:

We were so thrilled with the creative results of shooting IMAX for Mission: Impossible that we jumped at the chance to use the format for Star Trek. All expectations were exceeded — the action and resolution is insane at this scale. We cannot wait for audiences to see the crew of the Enterprise in a way they never have before.

The press release also adds:

Several key sections of the film that feature big action set pieces have been captured with IMAX cameras, which has become an integral tool for visionary filmmakers to tell their amazing stories.

Unfortunately, the film will be post-converted for 3D, which typically does not produce the best looking 3D possible, although seen on the IMAX scale will no doubt help the quality of the finished film. Are you excited to see Star Trek 2 in IMAX? How about 3D?
