Everyone loves Stan Lee’s cameos in Marvel flicks, and his appearance in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will be especially poignant.

One of the most fun treats found in Marvel movies are the cameos by Stan Lee. As the brains behind Marvel and the creator of some of our favorite heroes, it’s always so fun to see the silly and creative ways that each Marvel flick manages to insert Lee into their movies. And while Lee still has several MCU cameos coming up, it’s his appearance in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that might be the most poignant given its proximity to Lee’s death.

While Lee’s cameos can sometimes veer into just being funny or silly winks to the audience, as Deadline reports, it was important to the Into the Spider-Verse directors that Lee’s cameo had significance to the plot. Because of this, Lee doesn’t just appear in the film at a pivotal moment for the movie’s hero, Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore), but he also doles out valuable advice to the hero — and the audience, by extension.

Understandably, the team of directors didn’t want to give too much away, but Bob Perischetti explained a bit more about Lee’s cameo to Deadline, saying, “It was important to us that his character was important to the plot. And we achieved that, his character has a key moment and gives Miles a talisman.”

While the moment would have always been an impactful one, given Lee’s very recent death on November 12, it makes it even more powerful. Into the Spider-Verse’s third director, Rodney Rothman, said the moment has had quite an emotional impact on audiences, “Watching it with an audience the other day and all the different emotions that they were giving off was just incredible.”

While we have forthcoming cameos from Lee in upcoming MCU movies like Captain Marvel and Avengers 4, Stan Lee’s appearance in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse might be the most emotional cameo headed our way. Not only will he be helping Miles decide what kind of a person and hero he wants to be, but it sounds like Lee’s words will impact moviegoers as a fitting farewell to the man who gave comic book and comic book movie fans so much.

So be sure you’ve got your tissues with you when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hits theaters on December 14, because it sounds like we’re in for an emotional ride.
