Spotify is currently testing out a new feature that’ll put the power to block and mute artists in the hands of its users.

According to The Verge, Spotify is in the midst of testing out a new feature called “don’t play this artist.”

The new feature, which can currently only be accessed by those using the latest version of their iOS app, allows users to block an entire artist from playing on the platform.

To enable the feature, one simply has to go to an artist’s page and tap on the three dots on the top right hand corner of the screen. Once you do that, you’ll be able to enable the “Don’t play this artist” feature for the artist of your choice.

Enabling the feature will make it so songs from the artist won’t play from libraries, playlists, chart lists, or radio stations while you’re using Spotify.

One thing the new feature can’t do, however, is prevent songs the artist is featured on.

The new feature may seem unnecessary to some, but its appeal is that it puts the power to mute artist in the hands of individual users.

It’s especially fitting that Spotify is choosing to roll out the new feature right now given the #MuteRKelly protest, which was born shortly after Lifetime’s explosive six-part docuseries premiered earlier this month.

Spotify has dabbled with the idea of blocking artists before. Just last year, the music streaming platform announced plans to remove Kelly’s music along with tracks by XXXTentacion from Spotify curated playlists as part of a new “hate content and hateful conduct policy.”

Just two weeks later, the music streaming service reversed its decision following public outrage, admitting that they rolled out the feature wrong and “could have done a much better job.”

With that in mind, the “Don’t play this artist” feature sounds like a happy medium as it ultimately leaves users in control of their own listening experience.

The new Spotify feature is currently being tested exclusively through the latest version of the Spotify app on iOS. There’s no word on when the music streaming service will make the feature more widely available.
