The first trailer for the second theatrical SpongeBob SquarePants film Sponge Out Of Water appeared online Thursday morning.

The brand-new trailer, which debuted last week at San Diego Comic-Con, starts off with an animation style we’re quite familiar with thanks to years of watching the Nickelodeon television show. In the second half of the trailer, SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Squidward, and Mr. Krabbs move out of the water and into a new animation style.

To “rewrite” a story that hasn’t been penned in their favor, SpongeBob turns his friends into super heroes to beat the bad guy. The movie looks like it could be a hit with kids who have a wacky sense of humor, but people in their 20s who watched the show years ago may be hard pressed to find a reason to see it in theaters (other than for nostalgic purposes). The trailer – viewable above – is worth a watch to decide for yourself.

Below is the film’s new poster which just debuted today:

The first SpongeBob movie was released in 2004 and featured one-time co-stars Scarlett Johansson, Jeffrey Tambor, Alec Baldwin, and David Hasseloff.
