A Splatoon 3 release date may not be announced any time soon, but the Nintendo exclusive third turf-war title is a possibility.

The second title in the Splatoon series released in the summer of 2017, and ever since has received consistent DLC updates. With the release of the Octo Expansion, it seems as though Nintendo’s focus is planted firmly with the second title, and they aren’t yet thinking much about how Splatoon 3 would look.

Splatoon 2 Producer Hisashi Nogami spoke with Famitsu about how Splatoon 2 came to be, and how the thought process behind Splatoon 3 is already much different.

Splatoon 2’s production started moving right after 1 was released. Now we also had production for Octo Expansion so we’re fully focused on the updates, and we still haven’t thought of the future.”

This “future” would likely be a proper third title for the Splatoon series for the Nintendo Switch. Sales of both the Switch and Splatoon 2 have been great, which may mean that holding off on Splatoon 3, at least for the time being, is a wise decision.

Nogami continued, “For future plans, we’ll think of them after everything is over. We’re not yet at a phase where we can make a promise, but we’d like to return the favour in some sort of way to many people who have supported us.”

From Nogami’s comments, it seems as though he is hopeful for a third title in the Splatoon series. Splatoon 2 is still a semi-recent game, and with it having so many new content updates, fans seem mostly satiated with what the family-friendly turf-war shooter has to offer.

“If you continue to support us, it might turn into reality,” teased Nogami. For now, players will have future Splatoon 2 DLC content to look forward to. “Weapon and stage additions as well as Splatfests are over,” said Nogami, but “Balance adjustments and Monthly League Matches will continue.”
