The first trailer for Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story is finally here— check it out below!

Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated remake of West Side Story might have had to wait in the wings a bit longer than initially expected, but the movie musical is about to take center stage.

On Sunday (April 26), The Walt Disney Company unveiled the first official teaser trailer for Spielberg’s West Side Story during a commercial break for the 2021 Oscars ceremony.

The teaser offers up flashes of the Academy Award winning director’s take on the timeless Sondheim and Bernstein musical, putting an emphasis on setting the scene before going on to showcase glimpses of some of the key players on both the Sharks and the Jets.

Adapted from the 1957 Broadway musical for the screen by Tony Winner Tony Kushner, West Side Story is set in the late 1950s in New York City, and tells the tale of star-crossed lovers, Tony and Maria.

The highly anticipated movie musical stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); and Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke).

Also on board is EGOT winner Rita Moreno, who scored an Oscar win for her portrayal of Anita in the original big screen adaptation of the musical. This time around, she’ll be taking on the role of a new character named Valentinam who owns the corner store in which Tony works.

Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story hits theaters on December 10, 2021.
