Sony Studios has hired Drew Goddard to write and direct Spider-Man’s spinoff Sinister Six.

Back in December Sony hired Drew Goddard to pen the Sinister Six script, but now THR reports that Goddard will also be directing the Spider-Man spinoff.

Drew Goddard came to fame by serving as a writer and producer of two incredibly popular TV shows, Alias and Lost. He also wrote for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which means he has ties to someone very important to Marvel.

He also wrote Cabin in the Woods with Avengers‘ director Joss Whedon, which made his transition into being hired to write Marvel’s Daredevil series on Netflix seem like the perfect fit.

But how will that work out now that he’s working on what would presumably be an incredibly popular spinoff owned by Sony?

There were reports that Goddard could end up directing the Sinister Six film after he was hired to pen the script, and now it appears as though he will be taking complete control of Sony’s future project.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Sinister Six, it was created by Doctor Octopus after he realized that he would require assistance from Spider-Man’s other enemies in order to defeat him.

After a recent defeat, he contacts every known supervillain that had crossed paths with Spider-Man previously, but only Vulture, Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, and Sandman would respond to his request. This team of supervillains would team up to battle Spider-Man in multiple different storylines.

Apparently Goddard is a “self-professed comic book buff,” and is more than excited to be writing and directing multiple comic book films. The series will start production soon and will be part of Sony’s future of Spider-Man spinoffs.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 release date is set for May 2, 2014. Stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will be returning as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, Jamie Foxx (Electro) will also be in the film, along with Sally Fields, Dane DeHaan, Paul Giamatti, and Colm Feore.
