Fans should have expected this, but Sony and Marvel are reportedly struggling to decide on a single actor to play the next Spider-Man, and Asa Butterfield is reportedly no longer in the running.

From the start it seemed like a difficult situation for Sony and Marvel when they finally agreed to allow Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony was reportedly in charge of casting the new Spider-Man, but the industry expected an actor to be cast over two weeks ago, and it seems we’re still not close to knowing who will play the webslinger.

The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider has revealed that Sony and Marvel are struggling to pick a new Spider-Man, and even said sources revealed that Asa Butterfield was no longer the top choice for the two studios. This is surprising, as Butterfield has reportedly been the top choice for a few months now.

Sneider revealed that the only three actors left in the running are Tom Holland, Charlie Plummer, and Matthew Lintz. This is somewhat surprising, that the studios are still not able to pin down an actor for the highly sought after role, but when two titans are working with each other we imagine it’s difficult to come to an agreement.

He later said that Marvel wants Charlie Plummer, and Sony wants Tom Holland. This is a major problem though, as it was always the plan to have Spider-Man make an appearance in Captain America: Civil War, which is currently filming.

It’s possible this could all get worked out in the next few weeks and Marvel would have more than enough time to film Spider-Man’s scenes for Cap 3, but it’s looking like this new pairing of studios may not work as seamlessly as we’d hoped.

As for Asa Butterfield no longer being in contention, that’s not confirmed, but it seems he’s no longer the top choice for either studio. We’ll be sure to keep a close eye on this to see if Tom Holland or Charlie Plummer end up being our next Spider-Man.
