Between all of the movie, cartoon, and video game adaptations of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, who can blame you for feeling Spider-fatigued?

Look, I get it. You’ve played everything from the Spider-Man 1 movie tie-in to the excellent Ultimate Spider-Man. When Hollywood started to churn out a third iteration of the Spider-Man series, you’d figured you’d had enough.

The thing is, as popular as the Spider-Man series has always been, it has taken up until now for the web-slinger to reach his peak. It is my hope that all of the hype behind Spider-Man PS4 lives up to the Spider-Man: Homecoming payoff, while still staying in its own lane. Here are my reasons for picking up Spider-Man PS4 next month.

An adult telling of Spider-Man

Uncle Ben. Those two words are enough to set any Spider-Man fanatic into a tizzy. The Spider-Man origin story has been done over, and over, and over again.

There can only be so many tellings of Uncle Ben’s murder before we all collectively decide that enough is enough.

In Spider-Man PS4, Sony is allowing Peter Parker to explore a more adult lifestyle. That means no more sneaking out of school to have rascally Washington Monument adventures, as well as not having to catch Mary Jane before she drops her school lunch.

Now a scientist and a proficient quipper, Spider-Man is done with all of the Green Goblin battles and girl-next-door romances. Although Aunt May is still calling him from time to time to ask him over for dinner…

New scientific gadgets

Spider-Man has always had some super neat gadgets, some of which by Tony Stark were shown off in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

The Spider-Man in this game will have some fun returning and new abilities, including a spider-drone, not unlike the other Insomnia Games game Batman: Arkham Asylum. Peter will also be able to create holographic distractions of himself, as well as trip-mines and web bombs.

The combat also resembles a lot of the Batman: Arkham Asylum series, which is a welcome addition, seeing as the critically acclaimed Batman games did their fighting mechanics oh-so-right.

I’m sure Sony is keeping a few tricks up their sleeves for other fun gadgets for Spider-Man to show off, but as for right now, I’m already stoked to try out all of his fun new toys.

The Sinister Six

The Sinister Six is a terrifying and wonderfully evil organization out to get Spider-Man in this game.

Shown off at this year’s E3 presentation, the 5 Sinister Six members revealed thus far are Vulture, Rhino, Scorpion, Electro, and Mister Negative. The sixth member remains a mystery, but we can only bet that they’ll be an awesome final boss.

We’ve seen various iterations of some of these characters in other Spider-Man games, such as Rhino in Ultimate Spider-Man and Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man, but it is a rare treat to see them all acting together.

If I had one hope, it would be that the Green Goblin was nowhere to be found in this iteration of Spider-Man. Seriously. There are only so many times that we can kill an Osborn.

Mindblowing physiscs

Dang, does this spider have some moves. He skids through traffic with a web attached to one hand and the other sliding on the pavement. He crashes through both windows of a moving car, sending the driver flying out with the shattering broken glass.

As a helicopter crashes down to the ground, Spider-Man desperately shoots webs all over it, and then pulls it up with some web slings to nearby buildings.

There’s no denying that Spider-Man has never looked so damn cool. It will be a joy and a treat to play through some of these sequences, but I won’t be mad if most are showcased in cutscenes.

Whether you’re a Spider-Man superfan or webslinging amateur, there’s no denying that Spider-Man PS4 looks beyond amazing, and perhaps even a little incredible.

Spider-Man will release exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on September 7, 2018.
