Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is officially an Oscar-winning film, and in a new featurette, Insider shows just how the film was made.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is being hailed as one of the best Spider-Man films ever. After taking home an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, this definitely seems to be the case. Not only is the story one you can’t miss, but the animation style is pretty amazing as well. To give us a bit of a glimpse into how exactly Into the Spider-Verse was brought to the big screen, Insider released a new featurette giving us the scoop.

While this featurette gives us a small taste at the unique animation style, we also see the huge amounts of work that went into making Spider-Verse the amazing film that it is. The movie had hundreds of animators working on the movie, and according to this featurette, it took an entire year for filmmakers to nail down 10 seconds they were happy with.

Animators also didn’t try to make Into the Spider-Verse photorealistic. For instance, while other animated movies use something called “motion blur” to make action scenes seem more realistic, Spider-Verse employed an old-school animation technique called “smear.” While motion blur blurs the characters while they’re moving, using the smear technique animates the movement.

So if you were to screenshot an action scene from Spider-Verse, it would look like the character had several limbs while performing the action. It’s a small thing, but it allowed animators to keep the movie in that fun space between realism and comic book, making the movie have a truly unique feel.

These things and more are what made Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse a great film and a breath of fresh air in the animation space. This great featurette shows us just how much love and care was put into the film, and helps highlight all of the really cool tricks animators used to bring this film to life.
