The forthcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming is in talks with Jake Gyllenhaal to star as the antagonist to Tom Holland’s Spidey.

Deadline reports that Gyllenhaal is expected to play Mysterio / Quentin Beck. The character is a long-time foe of Spider-Man, having used his magical, hypnotic, and illusional powers to frame the web-slinger.

Talks between Gyllenhaal and Sony are still early but the deal is expected to go through.

Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts is returning for the second movie following the critical and commercial success of his Marvel adaptation. The entire Holland-led Spidey series is rumored to be set through all four years of high school as Peter Parker continues to develop his powers.

Interestingly, Gyllenhaal was once up for the role of Spidey in the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man series when Maguire was injured before shooting the sequel. The two actors look so similar that Sony thought replacing Maguire with Gyllenhaal would be a safe move.

The next Spider-Man movie is booked for a July 2019 release. Homecoming’s villain was Vulture played by Michael Keaton.
