While Spider-Man himself has yet to be cast for Marvel and Sony’s reboot, new reports have revealed that two directors are at the top of the pile to direct the first solo film coming up in 2017.

Deadline reports that Sony and Marvel have “zeroed in” on their favorite directors for the first solo Spider-Man film, and the two names that keep coming up are Ted Melfi and Jonathan Levine. Melfi recently directed St Vincent, with Levine directing the zombie flick Warm Bodies.

While those two seem to be the frontrunners as of now, directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein are reportedly still in contention as well. This short list has been whittled down from about a dozen directors who were originally being considered, so it looks like we may have a director about the same time we have an actor cast as Peter Parker.

Also mentioned in the report is Jon Watts, who has mainly been a commercials director, but recently made his feature film debut during Sundance with Cop Car starring Kevin Bacon.

The final decision as to who will direct the new Spider-Man film is down to Marvel president Kevin Feige and producer Amy Pascal. This is a unique situation, as the two studios have been splitting duties a bit to get Spider-Man in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, so we’re curious if it’s been difficult to get the project moving forward with two parties in the mix.

Marvel and Sony are also meeting with writers for the film, but it’s possible that the new director will also write the script with the way things are going. We’ll be very curious to see which director ends up with the job, as we imagine they’ll have to work closely with Marvel and the Russo brothers who are directing Captain America: Civil War, the first film that will see the new Spider-Man on the big screen.

The first solo Spider-Man film was originally set to be directed by Drew Goddard, but it looks like he was tossed out when Marvel and Sony finally made a deal to get Spider-Man in the MCU. The first solo Spider-Man film is still set to hit theaters on July 28, 2017,
