New reports confirm that the list to play Spider-Man has been whittled down to five actors, which includes Asa Butterfield, Nat Wolff, Tom Holland, Liam James, and Timothee Chalamet.

Earlier today a rumor surfaced that suggested Sony and Marvel had gotten their list down to just five actors to test for Spider-Man over the next few weeks. Now, The Wrap confirms the five actors, and says it’s still possible there are a few others testing as well.

Sony is preparing to make test offers to multiple young actors next week, with a decision reportedly being made in less than three weeks. While the report does name five actors, we should remind readers that none of these actors have officially been given test offers, but they are the “strongest contenders” for the highly coveted role of Peter Parker according to sources.

Nat Wolff is probably at the head of the pack right now, after his role in The Fault in Our Stars, and he’ll also be in John Green’s next film adaptation Paper Towns. Liam James has been seen on the hit show The Killing, and Timothee Chalamet was on Showtime’s massive hit show Homeland and Chris Nolan’s Interstellar.

Asa Butterfield was in director Martin Scorsese’s film Hugo, which had the actor alongside Chloe Moretz and Sir Ben Kingsley. He was also in Ender’s Game, which showed he definitely has some acting ability. Tom Holland is in Ron Howard’s upcoming epic In the Heart of the Sea, where he plays a young Thomas Nickerson.

All of the actors have solid experience, and they all fall in line with what we’ve been hearing from Marvel and Sony sources, which is that they want to cast a very young Spider-Man, that way he can grow up as the movies progress. It should be noted that they are all 18+ years old though, which is a slightly older than we were led to believe the studios wanted.

Spider-Man is supposedly going to have at least a cameo in Captain America: Civil War, which shoots in just two weeks, but they could easily shoot Spider-Man’s scenes at a later date, even after production has ended if they wanted to include him in some way. But, if they cast him soon, we may be seeing more Spider-Man than we thought, as he’s a key figure in the Civil War storyline.

As recent reports have mentioned, while we have had a high-school Peter Parker before, this would be the first time that the character would actually be played by an age appropriate actor. Some of these actors are incredibly young to take on such a massive role, but it’ll be interesting to see if Marvel and Sony find the perfect fit for their new Spider-Man, who will be in multiple Marvel movies, including several solo Spider-Man films.

The first solo Spider-Man is set to hit theaters on July 28, 2017, and there’s a lot of evidence that Spider-Man will show up in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016.
