The cast of Space Janitors recently spoke to Hypable about their experiences working on the sci-fi/comedy webseries, their character’s dreams, and more.

The sci-fi/comedy webseries Space Janitors is Hypable’s Webseries of the Week! To mark the occasion, Hypable recently spoke with cast members Brendan Halloran (Darby), Pat Thornton (Mike), Evany Rosen (Edith) and Scott Yamamura (Dennis 4862.)

Exclusive Interview:
The cast of ‘Space Janitors’

Before you were cast, what excited you about ‘Space Janitors’?

Brendan Halloran: Before I was cast I didn’t know what to expect. Even after I was cast I still didn’t grasp the scope of what we were about to do until I showed up to the studio a few days early and saw these massive sets. That’s when it sunk in that I was going to get to be in a real sci-fi show like I grew up watching. You don’t get to do that everyday. I guess before I was cast I was probably just excited to leave the audition. I don’t like auditions that much.

What was the audition process like?

Scott Yamamura: It was fun. Hard, but fun. I had to read a scene where I am talking to another clone, myself, which has its problems since there is only one of me. Also, Davin, the producer, looked on from the shadows like an evil genius, which was a little unnerving.

What have been the most exciting and challenging aspects of acting on ‘Space Janitors’?

Pat Thornton: The most exciting and challenging aspects of working on Space Janitors are the same. It’s exciting because as a Star Wars fan, it’s a blast to get to play in a similar universe, and I guess the most challenging thing was pretending that everything was real and that I got my arm cut off by a real lightsaber.

What is it like to work on webseries?

Evany Rosen: In the case of Space Janitors, working on a web series is actually a whole lot like working on any other smaller budget set. Which is another way of saying it’s got a really impressive budget for a web series. It’s the perfect blend of feeling like you’re in a professional environment but also getting to 100% screw around with your friends. Which is an ideal breeding ground for on-camera comedy I think.

Are you a fan of sci-fi/fantasy work in general? What do you think ‘Space Janitors’ adds to the genre?

Evany: I’d say I’m a relatively seasoned sci-fi fan/nerd. So I was pretty over the moon when I found out about Space Janitors. I think the magic of it lies in marrying referential humor with another level of comedy that comes purely from character and situation (rather than reference). So the diehard sci-fi fans get a healthy dose of hidden references and goofy homages, but also my aunt, who literally does not know the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars, still thinks it’s hilarious because of the jokes that would be jokes in any galaxy. Which is good – because we’re mostly trying to target the show towards my one aunt.

What do you think is your character’s greatest strength? What is their greatest flaw?

Scott: These are some pretty nice job interview questions…

For strength, I would say Dennis is pretty enthusiastic and eager, an all around positive guy. ALSO, he can do a pretty sweet barrel roll if need be.

His greatest flaw would be his blaster skills. Dennis doesn’t aim his blaster, mostly cause he shoots from the hip and doesn’t hit much, looks good, but doesn’t hit much.

If you could tell your character one thing, what would it be?

Pat: If I could tell my guy anything it would be this: “The Empire is bad, dude.”

At the end of the average standard evil space station workday, what do you think your character really wants?

Scott: At the end of the day Dennis just wants what every guy wants, a pat on the back for a job well done and perhaps a extra bit of mush on his plate.

If you could be Dark Lord for a day, in any fictional, non-fictional, or as-yet-undiscovered universe, what would you do?

Brendan: When you’re Dark Lord, people tip toe around you. So I figure I’d use that to skirt most of my responsibilities for the day. Like, “I’m not taking the dog for a walk. I’m not doing those dishes. And I’m gonna sit here and read this Hawkeye comic like I want!” And then not feel guilty about it.
