NBC’s The Sound of Music Live! drew in a stunning 18.4 million viewers. With ratings that high, it should be no surprise the network is thinking about what musical to take on next.

The New York Times confirms with NBC that they’re currently discussing what production to bring to live television in 2014.

UPDATE: USA Today reports that Peter Pan is one of the leading candidates for 2014. The show first hit the stage in the 1950s.

“All weekend, people have been calling us and emailing us,” NBC Entertainment chairmen Bob Greenblatt tells the Times. “Rights holders of musicals have said, ‘Please do one of our shows.’ We’re excited to try it again.”

Greenblatt is confident there are enough great musicals out there to keep them set for the foreseeable future. “There’s enough to do a handful of these over the next years, if we keep increasing the learning curve. There may be a little bit of a phenomenon to the first one of these. Who knows what happens Year 2, 3 or 4. But you’ve got to have events. I think we could do this again — and again and again.”

Future musicals will obviously require big stars like Carrie Underwood who Greenblatt credits with drawing their record-breaking audience. “I’m not sure almost 20 million people would have come out for a lot of other names,” he says. Producer Neil Meron adds, “She really delivered her audience, her fan base.”

Meron, co-producer Craig Zadan, and Greenblatt will remain focused on selecting their next musical, and the latter feels confident that they won’t need 18 months to prepare their next one like they did for The Sound of Music now that they know the production process.
