The Sound of Music Live! starring Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer aired on NBC Thursday night, and the network pulled in huge ratings for the event.

The live performance of the classic musical The Sound of Music welcomed 18.47 million viewers and a 4.6/13 rating in the 18-49 demo. The numbers are an impressive feat for NBC who hasn’t seen numbers this high since the series finale of ER in 2009 (excluding sports) and has struggled to find an audience on Thursday nights.

The Sound of Music Live! was a hot topic on Twitter Thursday night as everyone – including critics, who obviously didn’t have screeners to view in advance – tuned in to share their thoughts on the vocal stylings of Underwood in the role of Maria and Moyer’s portrayal of Captain Von Trapp.

The production was an impressive feat considering it used several sets and worked around cameras and microphones as it was broadcast live on network television. While Underwood’s acting skills aren’t the greatest, her best moments were when she was singing the classic Sound of Music songs.
