HBO’s The Sopranos is officially heading to the big screen.

According to Deadline, New Line is currently in the process of developing a big screen prequel to HBO’s hit crime drama, The Sopranos.

The new film is set to take place in the 1960s during the Newark riots, a time when African-Americans and Italians found themselves on opposing sides.

The great news for fans who’ve been itching to dive into what transpires before the show even takes place is that there are a few familiar faces involved in the project behind the scenes.

The movie, currently titled The Many Saints of Newark, is being written by David Chase with help from Lawrence Konner. As those who are familiar with The Sopranos know, Chase created the HBO series, while Konner served as one of the writers.

Though there aren’t many more details to go off of, one interesting tidbit about the prequel is that it is set to include some fan-favorite characters.

Currently, there’s no word yet on who has been cast in the project, or whether we’ll see any of the series’ original cast make an appearance.

Even so, it’s exciting that the prequel is giving Chase and Konner the opportunity to explore another part of the world they created with HBO’s hit crime drama television series.
