Some fans are petitioning for a remake of season 8 of Game of Thrones, but Sophie Turner finds the entire thing disrespectful.

It’s no secret that reviews for the final season of Game of Thrones have been…mixed, to put it gently. Many fans found themselves frustrated at the pacing of the final season and thought major arcs were rushed to a conclusion or disregarded entirely. Because of this, some of the fandom thought the appropriate response would be to launch a petition calling for a remake of the season.

Sansa Stark herself, Sophie Turner, shared her thoughts on the petition. Understandably, she didn’t find the push to be funny or cute. In fact, she thought it was downright disrespectful.

In an interview with the New York Times, she acknowledged fans have an idea of how shows like this should end and are bound to speak out against an ending they don’t like. However, calling for the entire thing to be remade is a slap in the face for those who made the actual show.

It can be easy for some to call out people like D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, individuals who seem to be larger-than-life and almost untouchable, but petitions like this often hit those lower down on the chain of command, like the crew, the hardest. Bringing a world like Westeros to life is a huge undertaking that requires hours of hard work that the average TV viewer might not ever see or know exists, and Turner found the call to essentially erase all of that work to make a different final season upsetting.

All of these petitions and things like that — I think it’s disrespectful to the crew, and the writers, and the filmmakers who have worked tirelessly over 10 years, and for 11 months shooting the last season,” she said. “Like 50-something night shoots. So many people worked so, so hard on it, and for people to just rubbish it because it’s not what they want to see is just disrespectful.

Regardless of your feelings about the series finale and the final season, Game of Thrones is a huge accomplishment. It changed the television landscape forever and brought stories to life in ways we hadn’t seen before. Regardless of your feelings of how the show ended, that accomplishment is huge, and shouldn’t be erased by fans upset that a show didn’t end how they wanted.

It is a bit of a troubling trend as petitions like this have also cropped up for some major motion pictures deemed by some to be “disappointing.” We’re glad Sophie Turner spoke out. After all, being critical and discussing a show is fine, but asking to erase the hard work of so many to get specifically what you want out of a show or movie isn’t.

The series finale of Game of Thrones aired on May 19, but you can catch up and see Sophie Turner and the entire GoT team’s hard work when you stream the episode on HBO Go.
