Yesterday, reports suggested that Spider-Man may be joining Marvel’s The Avengers, but a new report says Spider-Man is being recast and the Venom movie is dead.

Sony is having some trouble this week according to reports. They have one of the most popular superheroes in the world in their portfolio, and they can’t figure out what to do with him.

A new report from Badass Digest says, “Sony is going to soft reboot Spider-Man with The Sinister Six, having a new actor playing a Spidey who works with the villains The Dirty Dozen style to take down a larger threat.”

While it’s still from the rumor mill, this is starting to sound like there is a lot of talk that Sony has no idea what they should be doing with Spider-Man.

Despite the fact that Andrew Garfield does have a contract for a third Spider-Man film, the report says that Sony plans on putting “Spider-Man on the shelf for four or five years and see if they can develop any of the side characters into their own franchises.”

Sony has already pushed The Amazing Spider-Man 3’s release date back to 2018, which is surprising enough, but these new reports suggest that Sony is struggling to figure out what to do with their properties.

It’s bizarre to even think that they would be willing to recast Spider-Man before the next film, but the first two films with Garfield haven’t done that well critically or financially.

The studio certainly needs to do something with the character, as Andrew Garfield even revealed he was unsure of the franchise’s future, but it would be very exciting if Sony would be willing to let Spider-Man join his fellow Avengers.

We would love to see Spider-Man in an Avengers film, but we know that the legality of this is nearly impossible and now things have become even more tangled up.

On a related note, the report also suggests that the Venom spinoff is “virtually dead.” This doesn’t mean that the Sinister Six film won’t happen, but the house of cards is starting to wobble over at Sony, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see some films canceled.

We’ll keep a close eye on this, as it’s surprising to see Sony struggling so much with such a popular superhero. We hope they figure out how to get Spider-Man back on the big screen, but more importantly, we hope that the future films are worth seeing.
