Sony’s once-secret idea to merge the Jump Street and Men in Black franchises is moving forward, and the movie is closing in on a director.

The studio’s interest in merging the two properties first surfaced during the big studio leak in late 2014. The idea was met with a lot of surprised faces, but that hasn’t stopped Sony from pressing on. Today it seems to be official: The third movie in the Jump Street series, titled 23 Jump Street, will totally serve as a crossover with the Men in Black series.

Variety reports Sony is in “early talks” with James Bobin to direct the movie, but warns the project hasn’t been formally greenlit. Despite the lack of an official “go,” they’re aiming to begin filming in the summer.

21 Jump Street and Men in Black III were both released in 2012, and 22 Jump Street debuted in 2014.

Although Jump Street stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are expected to be back for the threequel, Men in Black stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not. Sony is reportedly looking to hire two younger actors for those roles. (Is it too early to ask for one or both of them to be women? Two ladies would be a nice contrast against the Jump Street boys.)

Phil Lord and Chris Miller directed the first two Jump Street movies for Sony, but with the directing duo tied up working on a Han Solo spinoff for Disney, the 22 Jump Street sequel has had to move into new hands.

James Bobin directed Disney’s two recent Muppet movies and also helmed this year’s Alice in Wonderland sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass. According to IDMb, he currently has no projects on his plate beyond the new Alice.
