In an attempt to branch out their Spider-Man franchise, reports suggest that Sony is planning to release the first female superhero movie within the Spider-Man universe in 2017.

Sony won’t admit it, but they’re struggling to expand their Spider-Man universe. They recently pushed their Amazing Spider-Man 3 release date to 2018, which is an additional two years between the second and third film.

Instead they moved up their first villain-focused film, Sinister Six, to a November 11, 2016 release. While we know Drew Goddard will be directing the spinoff, we don’t know who will be playing the key villains.

So in an attempt to squeeze more from their biggest character library, Deadline reports that Sony is mining their Spider-Man universe in an attempt to be the first studio to bring a female superhero to the theater.

This is a smart move on Sony’s part because they do have characters they could develop, and setting a tentative release date for the first female driven superhero film is probably one of the best ideas they’ve had in quite a while.

The big question is which characters they will develop and it’s currently all speculation, but screenwriter Lisa Joy Nolan has been hired to pen the script. Spider-Woman is someone we could see on the big screen, but fans may have a difficult time seeing Spider-Man show up just a year after Spider-Woman hits theaters.

Sony also has access to Black Cat, Firestarter, Silver Sable and Stunner, but which direction they plan on going is still up in the air.

This move comes after Warner Bros. revealed our very first look at actress Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman during their Comic-Con panel recently. The buzz was enormous, essentially becoming the most talked about reveal at SDCC ’14, which means that there is undoubtedly a large audience that are ready to see female superheroes with their own films.

Marvel has hinted at a solo Black Widow film, but nothing has been set in stone despite revealing nearly a dozen release dates for untitled films. We wouldn’t be surprised to see a solo female superhero movie in their lineup, but Sony seems like they want to make the first move.

Sony’s management is under pressure since The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to perform as well as they’d hoped at the box office and creating blockbusters with female superhero leads is definitely one way to right the studio’s ship.

We’re excited to start speculating about which female superhero will be hitting theaters in 2017 and more importantly which actresses will be in contention for the highly coveted role of being the first female superhero to be featured in a solo film.
