Sonic the Hedgehog is debuting early for purchase on Digital on March 31, 2020 from Paramount Home Entertainment.

Paramount didn’t explicitly state that the reason behind the early release schedule; however, given the current trend of movie studios releasing their movies to video-on-demand earlier than expected due to the impact of the coronavirus on theaters and the global box office, we can assume that Sonic likewise falls into that category.

In addition to Sonic the Hedgehog’s early debut on digital platforms, Paramount has likewise announced that the film will be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD on May 19 and that renting the videogame adaptation film at Redbox and similar businesses will be made available at around the same time.

Sonic was released in theaters on February 14, meaning it will have only had a theatrical run of about a month and a half before its comes to digital release platforms.

Sonic is the latest in a long line of films that are heading to video-on-demand streaming platforms early. Disney announced last week that it would be releasing its newest Pixar film, Onward, onto digital release a mere two weeks after it was released in theaters.

Universal announced that several of their current theatrical releases including Emma and The Invisible Man would be hitting digital on March 20, and Warner Bros. announced that The Way Back and Birds of Prey would likewise be made available for digital streaming early.

Sonic the Hedgehog was initially set to be released in November. However, the first trailer received incredibly negative feedback on social media, so Paramount delayed the release in order to redesign the look of the character. Despite the delay, Sonic opened to overall positive reviews from fans and critics alike and went on to gross over $306 million at the international box office on a $95 million production budget.
