Looks like the redesign for the Sonic the Hedgehog film did more than give it a successful opening weekend as the movie will now get a sequel as well!

According to Variety, who first reported the news, Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy have begun development on a sequel to the live-action family comedy Sonic the Hedgehog.

The sequel would reteam the crew of the first film, with Jeff Fowler directing, and Pat Casey and Josh Miller writing the script.

Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Toru Nakahara are producing the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel, with Hajime Satomi, Haruki Satomi and Tim Miller executive producing.

As the project has just been announced, no decisions have not been made yet regarding casting or a production start date.

Sonic the Hedgehog was based on the popular video game franchise of the same name from Sega. It told the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. Sonic and his new best friend Tom team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik as he plots world domination. The family-friendly moved starred James Marsden, Jim Carrey and Tika Sumpter, with Ben Schwartz voicing the titular character.

Sonic the Hedgehog was initially set to be released in November. However, the first trailer received incredibly negative feedback on social media, so Paramount delayed the release in order to redesign the look of the character. Despite the delay, Sonic opened to overall positive reviews from fans and critics alike and went on to gross over $306 million at the international box office on a $95 million production budget.

As with many films released in February and March, Sonic the Hedgehog was released for digital purchase early. The film only had about a month and a half in theaters before it was released on digital on March 31, 2020.
