The great turn out for the movie comes as somewhat of a surprise, considering the first trailer was released to widespread outrage and ridicule, largely due to the strange human-like teeth the animators gave Sonic. However, Paramount responded to the concerns of fans quickly and delayed the release of the movie to redesign the character. It’s possible that audiences are rewarding the studio for their attention to fans by going out to see the movie! On top of that, the nostalgia factor surely gave the iconic character’s story a boost at the box office.

Fans aren’t just seeing the movie, they’re also loving it. Sonic the Hedgehog currently has a 95% audience score (compared to a 63% critic rating) on rotten tomatoes. With results like that, it’s likely that the box office numbers will just keep growing weekend after weekend.
