Our beloved Sonic the Hedgehog is being immortalized in film, and we finally have the first trailer for the flick. Hold on to your hats, kids.

A lot of us grew up loving Sonic the Hedgehog. A hero of both animated series and video games, that little blue speedster ran his way into all of our hearts. So naturally, when it was announced that they were making a Sonic the Hedgehog movie (and a live-action one at that) we got…well, super nervous.

It’s always a risky move bringing something from the depths of nostalgic childhood love into the modern era. Mainly because it puts the movie in a tricky place of catering to the adults who grew up with the characters and catching the attention of kids today.

Well, we finally have our first real look at the film, so you can begin to decide for yourself if the flick looks good. Check out the brand new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog.

There are some definite great things this movie has going for it. Sonic is voiced by the hilarious Ben Schwartz, and Sonic’s iconic villain, Dr. Ivo Robotnik is played by Jim Carrey.

And while it’s got a solid cast, the most important thing about this movie is that it clearly decided who its audience is.

Judging by the trailer, this looks like it was made directly and intentionally for kids rather than being a movie for the adults who grew up loving Sonic who now also have children they want to be able to bring with them to the theater. And if you’re looking at the film in that lense, as something made 100% for kids, this looks like it will be a fun and cute movie that brings Sonic the Hedgehog to a new generation.

Sure, it’s a quite a bit different than what many of us grew up with (and personally, I still am not sure how I feel about Carrey’s look as Dr. Robotnik because it is A Lot), but this definitely looks like a movie that kids could get a kick out of. Plus, it’s always great when the actors love the characters they’re playing, and Schwartz hasn’t kept it a secret how utterly thrilled he is to be voicing the famous hedgehog.

We’ll have to wait for more trailers to see if this truly will be a fun, creative way to bring this world to kids today (and if Jim Carrey’s look in the movie will grow on us). But you can check out the adventure for yourself when Sonic the Hedgehog opens in movie theaters on November 8.
