Last night Louis C.K. hosted the season finale of SNL’s landmark 40th season, alongside musical guest Rihanna. Check out some of the highlights of the episode.

Last night’s cold open featured Kate McKinnon, yet again, as Hillary Clinton. McKinnon has opened SNL several times this season with her dramatic interpretation of Hillary Clinton. This time, she was visiting with kids who were about to head off to summer vacation. The sketch, which included some musical numbers, had the audience laughing throughout.

Louis C.K. took things to the edge of appropriate (per usual) with his opening monologue, doing his traditional stand up routine. His monologue speaks for itself, but be warned: it’s not for the feint of heart!

In the first sketch of the night, Louis C.K. portrayed an owner of two magical elves played by Vanessa Bayer and Kenan Thompson. The sketch featured the elves wanting to be disciplined and well… spanked for not finishing the shoes they were meant to create. It was an odd sketch but had the audience laughing at certain moments.

In what was probably the best sketch of the night, Louis C.K. played a Sprint employee who mocked his boss (played by Leslie Jones). Louis C.K. channels an entirely different side of himself in this hilarious sketch. There were also a few moments where Louis and Leslie Jones can be seen stumbling and laughing, but it’s the season finale so anything goes right?

During Weekend Update, Bobby Moynihan reprised Michael Che’s arch nemesis Riblet one more time this season. Riblet is slowly becoming a favorite on Weekend Update for all of his back and forth with Che! Check it out below!

In the final sketch of the season, Kate McKinnon reprised another lesbian character in a spoof of a 60’s sitcom called, “Whoops, I Married a Lesbian.” The sketch had funny moments but struggled with its pacing.

Rihanna also had two powerful performances during last night’s episode of SNL. Check out her performances of “Bitch Betta Have My Money” and her song “American Oxygen,” which featured powerful and moving images of American history as she sang lyrics reflecting on important and controversial issues very similar to the official video.

SNL will return in the fall for its 41st season. As usual there are no announcements or guesses as to which cast members may be departing after this season. The last few seasons of SNL have been a mixed bag with major players leaving between seasons and then the eventual complete overhaul of the cast. We’ll be sure to update fans as official word comes out about who will be leaving and what new faces will debut.

What were your thoughts about SNL’s 40th season, which featured the pop culture event from its 40th Anniversary Special earlier this year?
