Last night J.K. Simmons hosted SNL with musical guest D’Angelo. Check out the highlights from last night’s episode.

In the opening monologue, Simmons auditioned drummers for his band and none of them quite lived up to his expectations. It turns out he was most impressed with former SNL cast member Fred Armisen.

In the first sketch of the night, Simmons portrayed a host of a beauty pageant: Miss Trash 2015, in what was probably the sketch of the night.

In a hilarious music video pretty much the entire cast portray teachers that hang out at school and do illegal and demoralizing things while the students are home. This particular video highlights a lot of the best of what makes the current cast of SNL so great:

SNL’s most successful recurring Weekend Update character Jebediah Atkinson returned to talk about the Grammy Awards and the unworthy nominees.

Later in an awkward pre-taped video sketch, Mike O’Brien plays an alternate-universe version of Jay-Z which also features former SNL alum Jason Sudeikis as Kanye West and host J.K. Simmons as the rapper Nas.

D’Angelo, who hasn’t had new music in over a decade, returned with two performances – one of which themed around the recent police-related tragedies that have struck the U.S. Check out the performances below.

SNL will turn into Sunday Night Live in two weeks when the much-anticipated 40th Anniversary Special airs on Sunday, February 15 at 8/7c, with what will surely be a treat for long-time fans.

It was also announced that SNL alum Eddie Murphy will return to host. Murphy hasn’t been back to SNL since he was featured as a cast member nearly 30 years ago.
