Saturday Night Live season 40, episode 4 featured Hollywood titan Jim Carrey meeting characters from his past, a handful of good Halloween skits, and more.

The show’s cold open featured Jay Pharaoh playing President Obama to introduce his Ebola czar. The czar, played by Taran Killam, cleverly used the scare to try and deter people from voting in certain states.

Verdict: Not funny

Carrey then made his debut in the opening monologue dressed up for Halloween. He’s a character named Hellvis who appears to love pecan pie. It’s not really funny, it’s just… fun?

Verdict: Not funny

Perhaps one of the funniest bits of the night was Carrey’s impression of Matthew McConaughey’s recent Lincoln car commercials. Carrey nails what everyone is thinking at home: Why is McConaughey doing car commercials?

In a skit following Carrey during a family reunion, we learn that his family members are actually characters he’s played over his career. Jeff Daniels, his Dumb and Dumber co-star, makes a cameo during this skit to promote the sequel.

Verdict: Very funny

In “Graveyard Song,” characters played by Sasheer Zamata and Pete Davidson enter a graveyard where two ghosts named Paul and Phil keep interrupting a fun introduction by the rest of the graveyard’s inhabitants.

Verdict: Not funny

Weekend Update included talk about ebola, Romantic Comedy Expert Daisy Rose becoming her own romantic comedy, and Drunk Uncle sharing his thoughts on Halloween.

Verdict: Funny (as usual)

A “Ghost Chasers” segment featured a ghost skeptic discovering that supernatural creatures really do exist.

Verdict: Funny

In “High School,” Jim Carrey’s character tries to convince students during a zombie infection that his son (played by Pete Davidson) isn’t a zombie.

Verdict: Not funny

In one of the more impressive segments of the night, two characters played by Carrey and Kate McKinnon dress up as the same person from Sia’s “Chandlier” music video. They decide to break a tie by having a dance off. The dancing brings the two characters all around Saturday Night Live’s studio and even includes a cameo from Lorne Michaels. This one is great if only for the fact that it’s neat to see them use the entire studio space for a skit.
