SNL returned for its first episode of 2016, with host Adam Driver. And he brought a lot of fun Star Wars fun along with him!

The cold open of the night featured a spoof of this week’s Republican debate. It featured Darrell Hammond’s spot-on impression of Donald Trump and some hilarious lines from Taran Killam as Ted Cruz.

In his opening monologue, Adam Driver talked a little about Star Wars and how he had to let various Star Wars fans of the SNL cast down including Bobby Moynihan and Taran Killam who are known for being Star Wars fanboys.

The first sketch of the night fell slightly flat. The sketch featured two announcers replaying a horrifying football injury sustained by Pete Davidson’s character.

However, the momentum shifted in the first digital sketch of the night which featured Adam Driver as Kylo Ren in an episode of Undercover Boss. In the sketch, Kylo Ren plays a guy named Matt who isn’t so subtle about how he might potentially be their leader.

Driver and Cecily Strong played Aladdin and Jasmine on a magic carpet ride, but this wasn’t your typical carpet ride. It featured the two continually running in to flying objects before having to crash land at a nearby airport.

It wouldn’t be an episode of SNL without at least one experimental, off-the-wall type sketch, right? For this episode it featured Driver playing the host of a television show in which he comments on cat videos. Something tells us Kate McKinnon had a lot to do with the writing of this sketch given her past with cats on set at SNL.

SNL alum Fred Armisen also stopped by in a surprise tribute to the late David Bowie who passed away this week. Armisen talked about a memory of watching Bowie on SNL when he performed back in 1979. He then introduced a clip from the performance.

Musical guest Chris Stapleton performed two songs as well. Check out “Parachute” below.

Next week Ronda Rousey will host along with musical guest Selena Gomez.
