Leslie Jones, who joined SNL as a writer in early 2014, will now be a regular cast member on the show.

Jones, who has appeared in a couple of segments of SNL so far this season, including Weekend Update, will be a full time cast member when the show returns this weekend with host Jim Carrey.

Jones was part of an audition process last season to include a new African-American female cast member. Though she was considered in the final selections, the role eventually went to Sasheer Zamata. Jones was hired as a writer and after strong performances in other segments on the show, was eventually promoted.

Jones, a strong stand-out cast member each time she appeared on SNL, also joins newcomer Pete Davidson as the only two new cast members thus far in its 40th season.

It was recently announced that former cast member Chris Rock will be hosting SNL in November along with legendary musical guest Prince.

SNL returns this weekend, October 25, with host Jim Carrey and musical guest Iggy Azalea.
