Sean Hayes makes his Smash debut next week as Ivy’s newest leading man, but he’s like no one she’s ever worked with. Watch a hilarious sneak peek at his performance in 2×05 “The Read-Through” below!

Hayes, known for his role as Jack in Will and Grace, will play comedian Terry Falls, a comedian making his Broadway debut in Liaisons, in a multi-episode arc on the NBC musical drama.

But don’t expect any scenes with his former Will and Grace co-star Debra Messing. As Messing confirmed to EW, the duo won’t be on screen together.

“When you see the storyline, you will see that there was really no way to have them interact,” showrunner Josh Safran told The Hollywood Reporter. “It would have been forced, and very clear to the audience that we were just forcing a connection for them.”

Instead, Hayes shares the screen with Megan Hilty in a slightly crazed new clip from next week’s episode when he tells Ivy that he’s going off his meds (for mood swings, ADD and the like) to better his performance.

Episode synopsis:
