Although Smash season 2 (the series finale) wrapped last night and closed its doors for good, fans are hearing today what executive producer Josh Safran had in mind for season 3.

Executive producer Josh Safran revealed in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly that Smash season 3 would’ve focused on the making of a Hollywood movie musical. “It would shoot in New York. I felt like after two seasons of watching two shows full trajectories, I didn’t want to repeat the story again so I thought I would take the season off and do a movie musical still using Broadway actors, still using Broadway stages, maybe it would have even been set in the world of Broadway,” he explained. “Who knows because we didn’t even get that far but it would have given audiences a season to [see] a different way of muscials being put together and then you could come back to Broadway in season 4. You see the seeds that are in the finale.”

Safran also addressed Julia getting back with Michael Swift in the season 2 finale, and how the two would’ve been a question in Smash season 3. “Our goal was to bring [Michael] back and do image rehab for his character. That actually wasn’t a series finale decision. She was always going to see Michael Swift and we were going to wonder whether she was going to be with him next year. But the way in which that happened changed. Initially she was going to bump into him at the Tonys and they were going to have an interaction in which she was very happy to see him and he wasn’t happy to see her. So it was going to be a reversal of season one and for season 3 she was going to find out that she had to work with him but he didn’t want anything to do with her and she was still in love with him. But in the end, when we knew it was most likely a series finale, we just kept it to the scene at the door.”

Elsewhere in his interview with EW, Safran says that they didn’t know that Smash was moving to Saturdays (effectively canceling the show) until after they had wrapped production. So, there wasn’t a moment on set where they had to all say goodbyes because of the show shutting down for good.

Do you think a movie musical for Smash season 3 would’ve been a good direction for the show?
