There’s a new resident in Sleepy Hollow and his name is Nicholas Hawley. On the surface he’s just a supernatural bounty hunter that happens to run into Ichabod and Abbie a lot, but we have a feeling it gets a lot more complicated than that.

The new recurring character, portrayed by Matt Barr, has been in every Sleepy Hollow episode since episode 3 “Root of All Evil.” Is he really just one of Jenny’s friends that happens to deal in the occult as well? Or is there more depth to his character?

Having thought about this a lot we have a couple of theories about who Nicholas Hawley is, and/or who he will turn out to be. Check out our theories and let us know which you agree (or disagree) with!

Angel/Guardian

It wouldn’t be the first time a television show introduced a guardian and/or angel in the form of a human first. If Charmed fans can recall the sisters’ guardian angel/whitelighter, Leo, was first introduced to them as their handyman. It wasn’t until later in the series that they figured out Leo was really there to protect them.

We don’t think it’s a coincidence that Hawley wants to be on the front lines of this war. So could Hawley really an angel in disguise? You might be thinking that an angel or guardian would never be so rough around the edges, but Hawley could easily be conning Ichabod and Abbie for reasons beyond our knowledge. Maybe he’s meant to stay away from the two witnesses, only helping when he absolutely needs to.

Given that the show has demons a plenty, it would stand to reason that at some point in the show’s course they will introduce us to angels, or at least some other supernatural beings that are on their side of the war against evil. If this really is going to be a war, and since Moloch already has an entire army at his disposal, we can definitely imagine Hawley being the first of several good soldiers to join the ranks of Ichabod and Abbie.

Demon/Enemy

While we definitely want Hawley to be on the good side of the war, we can’t rule out the possibility that in the end Hawley will be a demon and/or enemy of Ichabod and Abbie. We can see him gaining their trust, getting comfortable and growing to be a part of their family only to betray them at the end of some epic season finale.

We already know that Hawley is (probably) unknowingly selling supernatural objects to Henry, but what if deep down he knows he’s partnering with the Horseman of War? It’s possible that Hawley has already made a deal with Moloch, and now Moloch is using him to get behind enemy lines.

Normal

This is the one we think is least likely, and/or the one we least want to be true. We really want Hawley to be some sort of supernatural aid (or enemy), but we can’t rule out the possibilities that he’s really just an average Joe that Jenny met on her travels. While his interest in the supernatural is definitely odd and something we want to learn more about, it could be just that: An interest.

Maybe Hawley has dealt with the supernatural in the past, and he’s lost his own family to something or someone in the supernatural world. That would be reason enough for this human to seek out supernatural objects, which would then cause him to run into Jennifer Mills.

We know that Hawley will grow closer to the gang as the season continues, but will he really be on their side all along? Or does he care too much about his own self-preservation to really trust the gang with his life? Maybe his loss of family is the reason he can’t trust anyone.

What are your ‘Sleepy Hollow’ theories?

Nicholas Hawley is definitely someone we want to keep our eye on, but maybe in the end he’ll just be your average recurring character with not a ton of importance. We can hope for some epic supernatural storyline to come out of this
