The sophomore season of Sleepy Hollow is over and now we wait for the confirmation, or declination, of a third. With the way this season ended, though, we think season 3 would give the show a fresh start.

This time last year we were well aware of the fact that we’d get more Ichabod Crane since Sleepy Hollow was renewed after only two episodes, and the fact that we haven’t heard about a third season by now is a little worrisome – especially considering the fact that the network has already renewed three of its primetime shows.

While we wait for an update on whether or not Sleepy Hollow will get a season 3, we thought we’d point out all the reasons why a new season means a new beginning for the show.

New enemies

With Henry and Katrina dead, and Abraham Von Brunt (aka Headless) out of the picture season 3 would likely set an entirely new enemy for the Witnesses and their friends to fight. Being that this is a supernatural apocalyptic show that enemy could be any number of things/being, and we wouldn’t be surprised of Orion was one of them. The zealot and former angel left but seeing as he’s still alive, we imagine him playing a bigger part in the third season.

Or maybe, if the show does it right, we’ll see the Devil himself play a part in the third season. Yes, the show could try to bring another Horseman or two but we feel that route is already played out and we’d love to see another different contender in the war for evil. Who’s a better advocate for evil than the devil himself?

New locations

When talking to TV Guide about expanding the world of Sleepy Hollow in season 2, executive producer Roberto Orci had said he’d love to see Ichabod explore more of the modern world. Given that he didn’t really get a chance to do that this season, a third season is an opportunity to right their wrongs.

Much of this season’s screen time was spent on the sour relationship between Ichabod and Katrina. Now with the relationship out of the way and the focus on the war being the prime story to tell, Orci has much more time to devote to Ichabod Crane and Abbie Mills exploring the modern world.

In the finale Benjamin Franklin told Abbie that he’s surprised that she hasn’t run into anyone else who knew about the secret war, and where better to locate those people than Washington D.C.? We hope that if Sleepy Hollow gets renewed for a third season Orci keeps his promise and brings Ichabod to our nation’s capitol.

New stories

Overall, since Sleepy Hollow has essentially solved and tied off most of the major story arcs introduced in season two, season three will give the executive producers chances to tell a completely different story pertinent to the war against evil.

At the TCA press tour Fox TV chairman and CEO Dana Walden stated that the network is going to attempt to make Sleepy Hollow less serialized and more episodic: “We’re excited about some creative changes on the show and bringing it back to something that feels a little more episodic in nature, that has closure and doesn’t feel quite so serialized.”

Despite saying there were no creative changes planned, which we knew to be false since the death of Jeremy and Katrina Crane, Walden also said “it was more [about] having a show that’s easier to access week to week that you don’t have to feel like if you tune into episode three of our new run, that you have to go back and watch the first two. So some greater procedural stories and maybe toning down a little bit the apocalyptic vision that existed in the initial episodes this season.”

So what does that mean for a possible third season? That we’ll be getting more monsters of the week type episodes and less over-arcing stories that involve love, rejection and loss. A third season of Sleepy Hollow would mean being able to explore the characters we already have more deeply, hopefully building on the relationship and trust between Ichabod, Abbie, Jenny and Captain Irving.
