The Sleepy Hollow season 3 finale was interesting, to say the least. We find ourselves at the end of another season with yet another completely different season ahead of us, if the renewal goes through.

All right, let’s just get the obvious over with. Abbie Mills is dead. There. I said it, now we can move on.

…who am I kidding, I know the fandom is going to be stuck on this major game changer — probably for months. And rightly so, as the entire show focused on her and her relationship with Ichabod Crane to save the world from the Apocalypse. If the show was going to continue, fans thought, it had to be with her and Crane and everyone else was on the chopping block.

Nope. That’s not the way Clifton Cambell (showrunner) plays the game, apparently. And you know what? I’m actually very excited and happy about this. Not to say that I didn’t like Abbie as a character, and I’m not saying she deserved to die, but when it comes to episodic mysteries and dramas like Sleepy Hollow, generally speaking you never have to worry about the main character dying.

Take a look as shows like Castle, Bones, Elementary, etc. All those shows have two main characters and everyone knows that unless some major issue is happening behind the scenes the show would never kill half of a pair like that. Well, I guess no one knew about Sleepy Hollow‘s issues behind the scenes.

If you think Abbie is going to come back, then put those hopes down to rest because according to THR, Nicole Beharie, who plays the character, has actually wanted to leave for quite some time. In fact, remember when she almost died in the middle of the season? That was supposed to be her official exit, but they extended it until the end of the season.

So yeah, Abbie is officially dead for good. But what does this mean for the rest of the show? This episode was pretty interesting and showed us where it could lead if it did get renewed. We found out that somehow, some way, Ezra was equipped with a letter from George Washington that put Ichabod Crane in charge of a secret government agency meant to police the supernatural.

We also found out what makes you a witness: Your soul, apparently. It’s not that specifically Abbie Mills was a Witness, but rather she carried the soul of a Witness. And now that she’s died her soul has moved on and found someone else in her extended family line.

If the show was going to get renewed, it would likely end up being Crane trying to figure out this secret government stuff and finding the next Witness to help him deal with the apocalypse.

I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this, only because it would be the third time that Sleepy Hollow essentially had to change the entire premise of the show to keep things interesting. The first time it premiered it was about fighting the Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The second time it changed it was about fighting Pandora because they’d defeated Moloch. Now Pandora is gone, and it’s going to add in some sort of government action?

I know that shows have to change their enemies in order to keep things interesting, but there’s been virtually nothing that has stayed the same since season 1. The only thing that has stayed have been Ichabod and Abbie, and now even Abbie is gone! It’s going to be interesting to see how the show progresses if the show gets rewnewed.

What did you think of the ‘Sleepy Hollow’ season 3 finale?
