Sleepy Hollow returns to its roots in the season finale, and we can’t be more excited for next season.

Meeting Again

The episode picks up where we left off, with Abbie stuck in jail and requesting to talk to Ichabod Crane. Being that he’s a high military official, they say she can’t get to him, so she tells them she has information about the Hessian soldier they’re looking for.

Meanwhile, Katrina goes to find Ichabod in his tent after his battle with the Horseman, but because Abbie called Ichabod away from battle and to her jail cell instead, he never fought the Horseman and never got wounded. She goes to find Abraham, aka the Horseman/Hessian, and becomes his ally in finding Ichabod and killing him.

When Ichabod does show up to the jail to talk to Abbie, she tries to convince him she has reliable information and will explain everything after Ichabod gets her out. Because she explains everything about the Hessian, Ichabod is able to believe her and gets her out to the battlefield where he was supposed to die. It’s during their outing that Abbie tells Ichabod she’s from the future, to which Ichabod thinks she’s insane. Then she realizes the fact that Ichabod didn’t die probably screwed up history forever.

Ichabod gets in trouble by his commander for taking Abbie out of jail, and he tells Ichabod that he needs to take her to an encampment for runaway slaves. On their trip to the camp, Abbie tells Ichabod that there’s one man who can back up her story: Benjamin Franklin.

R.I.P. Benjamin Franklin

Ichabod does believe Abbie enough to turn the carriage around to go see Franklin, while Abbie tells him that they are partners in the future and tries to convince him of this.

They arrive at Franklin’s and luckily for Abbie he believes her instantly. She updates him on the results of the war, and how the modern world has been shaped by his ideas. Ichabod is confused about everything, but Franklin tells him that Abbie is the American dream, and Abbie tells them the woman that’s out to get him is also a witch.

Because of the sensitive nature of the witch’s identity, Franklin asks Ichabod to get a book from upstairs while they discuss the fact that it is Katrina Crane. Franklin doesn’t think that Abbie should tell Ichabod, but he does believe that reversing the traveling spell is possible. It would undo everything that happened since she got there and return her to the time just before the spell was done.

Franklin explains that Grace Dixon, Abbie’s ancestor, is at Fredrick’s Manor and would know exactly how to undo the spell. Abbie asks how many people know about the secret war, and Franklin says there are levels and that he’s surprised she hasn’t met any who know about it in her era. Ichabod returns, but just as they prepare to leave, the Horseman arrives and causes havoc, attacking them and successfully decapitating Benjamin Franklin.

Moving Pictures

Ichabod manages to blow up the part of the basement where the Horseman stood and delay him for a brief moment, but then he rises and he and Abbie flee the scene. Ichabod puts Abbie back in jail, and says he shouldn’t have trusted her. He’s upset that she kept something from him as a secret between her and Franklin. Abbie then decides to tell him that the woman who’s against him is none other than his wife, Katrina Crane.

It’s then that Ichabod leaves, refusing to believe her, but as he does, Abbie tells him that Katrina is pregnant with his son, and that if he looks at her phone, he’ll find pictures of them that prove she’s telling the truth. After he leaves, Ichabod talks to his commander, who is angry that Ichabod didn’t take her to a slave camp and relieves Ichabod of his duty, telling him to go home.

He does go home, and he finds Katrina, who has a bunch of herbs that help with pregnancy on the kitchen table. Ichabod asks about them and she says she’s preparing them for a friend, and during their conversation Katrina prepares to magically throw a knife at him, but then someone from the military arrives and says that Washington requests his presence immediately. Before he leaves, he notices the evil grimoire on the table, and that makes him want to see Abbie again before he goes to Washington’s.

Ichabod gets to the jail and asks for Abbie’s personal affects, where he struggles with her phone and finds a video of him and Abbie in the future taking a selfie. Now believing her story entirely, Ichabod goes to rescue her from the jail cell and take her to Fredrick’s manor by using the tunnels under the town.

Back home

They arrive at the manor to find Grace, and she realizes exactly who Abbie is: The witness of their generation. Unfortunately, the Horseman and Katrina track them to Fredrick’s manor, but luckily there’s a magic ward that keeps them out as Grace and Abbie prepare the spell.

Katrina breaks the ward that protects the house and the Horseman goes to attack, so Ichabod buys time by fighting him. While they fight, Grace tells Abbie that there are pages in her journal left blank for Abbie to write on, and that their battle is far from over. She manages to do the spell and send Abbie back to the present day just before Katrina cast the original spell.

Katrina, absolutely pissed her plan didn’t work and that she got sent back to the present, then uses the grimoire to hoist Abbie up into the air and attempt to kill her. Unwilling to lose the war and his best friend, Ichabod kills Katrina by stabbing her, and she disintegrates before him.

Now that the two have defeated the enemies of the season, Abbie tells Ichabod that there’s still a long war ahead of them and that they have to prepare for it.
