Ichabod and Abbie both have their own issues to deal with in the newest episode of Sleepy Hollow, and things get extra creepy.

Rekindling Romance

The episode begins with a man restoring an old painting, which then spontaneously starts to bleed everywhere. Of course when the artist turns away to get something to clean it, it’s all stopped.

This episode Ichabod struggles with modern dress, again. He doesn’t understand the concept of business casual, and it’s because he’s going on a date with Katrina to rekindle their marriage. The location? The historical society — at the home John and Abigail Adams. Katrina was good friends with Abigail, as she was her midwife and delivered all five of their kids. Abbie reminds Ichabod to not name drop at the party (no first hand accounts, etc.) and Ichabod finds that unfair.

The painting (a self-portrait of James Colby) is at the party Ichabod and Katrina attend, and the historical associate says it hung in the Adams home for a long time, but Katrina doesn’t recognize it. Later, the art historian from earlier comes to talk to Ichabod about what happened in the painting, but gets whisked away before he can fully explain. It’s then that Katrina also feels a dark presence, and they decide to keep their eyes open.

The entire time at dinner, Katrina feels so sad to see all of her friend’s things and not being able to have said goodbye. She thinks her memories about Abigail have a purpose, and just as she discovers that, they find the body of the art historian hanging in the gallery.

Killer Colby

Ichabod has to investigate what happens while Sheriff Reyes is also at the house investigating, which makes it all the more difficult. Katrina realizes there was a string of murders exactly like this in the 1700s, and that John Adams was the one trying to figure out what was going on at that time. She learned about all of this through Abigail.

They investigate the painting and see that it’s bleeding. They realize that the assassin from the 1700s has been hiding in the painting. Right when they look at it, they notice that the person in the painting is now facing them.

They realize that James Colby is the perpetrator behind the crime and somehow managed to hide himself in the painting for centuries, and when the historian was restoring the painting, he must have disturbed it and activated Colby’s evil presence. Anyone who touches the painting becomes Colby’s next victim, and unfortunately for Ichabod, he’s already touched it.

Katrina keeps an eye on the painting to make sure no one touches it, and she discovers a hidden drawer in Abigail Adams’ desk, with a journal of some sort inside. But then she turns around and sees Colby (actual human/person) walking out of the gallery to go find Ichabod.

Turns out that the head of the society also touched the painting, and Ichabod tries to save him, but he ends up getting sucked into the painting. Ichabod thinks he might be able to enter the painting voluntarily to stop Colby, so Katrina tries to help and they succeed.

They find the head of the society in Colby’s house and manage to save him, get out of the painting and kill Colby.

Good or Bad?

Abbie is at the precinct studying her family journal she discovered earlier last season when Captain Irving shows up to the precinct and gets arrested. She doesn’t know if she should trust him, and goes to discuss what happened.

Irving doesn’t remember much; he only remembers dying on the battlefield. Abbie thinks he’s dangerous because the last time he was alive his soul belonged to the Horseman of War, but Irving doesn’t think that’s the case. He wants Abbie to bring his wife there so she can tell it’s really him, but Abbie leaves.

Jenny shows up to find out the news and she thinks that Irving is their friend and isn’t playing them, but Abbie thinks he’s here on Henry’s behalf. She asks Jenny to find a weapon to use against Irving, just in case he is here to fight them. Abbie goes to tell Irving’s wife about his return, and she wants to know how they’re supposed to tell if Irving is dangerous or not.

Jenny does have a weapon in mind to stop Irving, and it’s creature-killing bullets made from platinum from the actual gates of Hell. Only, the bullets are hidden inside the body of a deceased person that Jenny has to dig out and get, and the body is relatively freshly dead so she has to dig through flesh and guts.

At the end of the episode Sheriff Reyes tells Abbie the D.A. has found evidence that might mean Irving will walk away (remember he’s being held because people think he’s a cop killer).
