Sleepy Hollow season 2, episode 12, “Paradise Lost,” finally introduced us to angels…but not the kind we were hoping for.

Gone, Gone, Gone

The episode starts immediately after Henry kills Moloch. It seems that it caused an explosion and knocked everyone out, and when they awake Henry is gone. Abbie, Jenny, Ichabod and Katrina are okay but no one knows where Henry went.

The episode picks up six weeks after that, with Ichabod and Abbie at a farmer’s market. They’ve seen no sign of evil, but Ichabod is not convinced. He notices a rotten apple and splits it in half to reveal that it’s filled with maggots, and is positive that evil is lurking at the orchard it was grown in. Abbie doesn’t believe him and thinks their work might just be over, but takes him to the orchard anyway.

Orion the Zealot

It’s a good thing they go, because they find a group of demons in the nearby barn searching for someone. They try to fight them but then get interrupted when an angel, yes an actual angel, shows up. However this angel has black wings, so we’re not really holding our breath here. The angel kills one of the demons and then introduces himself as Orion.

Orion explains he was trapped in Purgatory for two hundred years, and escaped when the gap between Purgatory and Sleepy Hollow was opening. Along with him, though, those demons also escaped and now Orion wants to hunt them down along with any other creature that escaped with them.

In a conversation with Orion, Abbie finds out that he broke rank several hundred years ago. She also tries to get him to talk about God, or whoever (or whatever) is in charge, but of course he won’t answer. Then Orion reveals he’s after the Headless Horseman, because it was he who was responsible for sending Orion to Purgatory.

So Abbie takes him to the archives to talk with Ichabod and Katrina. It’s there that Orion and Katrina realize they were both trapped in purgatory, but we’re unsure if this is going to matter later in the season. Although every hint we’ve gotten about Orion is leading to very bad things.

Human Again

Do we really think Abraham can become whole again? We’re not sure, but Katrina seems to think so. With him locked up in their underground demon bunker, Katrina has been trying to find a way to stop him from being the Horseman of War.

Katrina calls Ichabod to tell him of the possibilities, but he doesn’t think it’s possible. They fight and fight about it, because Abraham being Katrina’s ex fiancé doesn’t make things any easier. It actually makes things worse, because when Katrina realizes that Orion is after Abraham she runs off and sets him free, choosing Abraham over Ichabod – at least for now.

Abbie and Orion go looking for Abraham together when Abbie gets a call from Jenny saying he’s at Abraham’s house in the carriage house (where Abraham’s demon friends made up a brand new axe for him). Then Abbie gets a second call from Ichabod, informing her that Orion is mentioned in several biblical stories stating he arrives before major disasters like Pompeii and Byzantine. The question is, was he there to stop them or was he there to cause them?

Abbie confronts him and he tells her that he is responsible because he is ridding the world of it’s evil. He believes that what he did was right and just for the beauty of the rest of the world, and plans on taking down Abraham and Katrina – oh and the entirety of Sleepy Hollow.

They find the Horseman in the barn and Orion manages to stab him with his halo (which, yes, is actually a weapon – that doesn’t seem very angelic, now does it?) and starts to absorb Abraham’s power. He plans on absorbing the Horseman’s power and use it to destroy Sleepy Hollow, but luckily Abbie and Ichabod work together to kill the demons and destroy Orion’s halo.

Now with Orion weaponless they can live to fight another day, and another demon.

Relationship Goals

Ichabod and Katrina have been fighting, and don’t see eye to eye anymore because of Abraham. Katrina thinks that she could save him, but Ichabod does not. So they’ve split, she’s staying at the cabin and he’s at the archives. That is, of course, until Ichabod goes to talk to Katrina. After the events of the episode Ichabod and Katrina agree to try to work on their marriage and not let Abraham get in the middle of it, so hopefully this ship won’t sink.

Meanwhile, Jenny is angry that Abbie isn’t with her at the bar to be her wing girl. She’s interested in the local bar tender, and actually manages to strike conversation with him before Hawley shows up. But he didn’t come empty handed! He brought a gift – the egg of Asag. It’s supposed to light up when there are demons nearby, but it doesn’t work in the bar so they go to figure out how to get it to work.

While they’re trying to work out the egg rock, Hawley confesses that he actually likes Jenny and is jealous of her flirting with the bar tender. She informs him he has no right to be jealous because he had his chance and he says he knows, but pshh, we’re boarding this ship right now.

Got Milk?

At the end of the episode Captain Irving walks into a grocery store (we promise this isn’t a joke setup) and starts to just ravenously drink milk and eat food without paying. He asks the clerk if it’s Heaven or Hell, and he responds with “Neither. It’s Sleepy Hollow.”

Is Captain Irving completely the same? Can we trust him? Is it really him? We’ll have to wait to find out.
