Sleepy Hollow‘s fall finale, “The Akeda,” brought us some major unexpected plot turns, and we’re wondering what it means for the rest of the season.

Soul Sword

Abbie and Ichabod try to head to Frederick’s Manor to stop Moloch, but their car battery shorts out. When they get to the repair shop the guy says it will take an hour once he has all the parts, so instead of waiting they commandeer the guy’s motorcycle to get there.

Once at the manor, none of the lights are on inside and they can’t seem to find anyone, but they do find a scale model of Sleepy Hollow, marked with several flags. They run a rope through all of the marked flags and it forms a pentagram. The pentagram will bring upon more demons from hell for the beginning of the Apocalypse.

They head outside and Katrina is tied to a wooden post for the binding ritual, but Ichabod and Abbie save her. Ichabod then uses the sword against the Horseman and destroys his axe, but instead of killing him he demands that the Horseman tell him where Moloch is.

Katrina extends the powers of her amulet to let Ichabod see Headless as Abraham. Abraham tells him that anyone who uses the sword must pay for the magic it wields with their life, so they die. Katrina says that the runes on the sword actually might prove that this is true, so they take Abraham and tie him up in their underground jail until they can figure out what to do.

Jenny finds a chapter in their family book that talks about the sword and confirms Abraham’s tellings. Basically, if you kill someone with the sword it consumes your soul, and in turn your life. But Jenny has an idea: Maybe Irving can use it without dying, since Henry already claimed his soul. Now they just have to find him.

Hailing Blood

Ichabod and Jenny listen to a message Irving left them, which clued them in to his hiding spot. They find him and tell him how he’s the only person who can wield the sword and fight Moloch and he is down to help as long as Jenny takes care of his wife and daughter.

Irving goes to interrogate Abraham, who tells him that Moloch and Henry are merging Purgatory with their world. They’re using the four white trees; each burning will represent a new level of merging. The first tree burnt equals lightning, the second will bring blood, the third will bring Moloch’s demon army, and the fourth will complete the formation of Hell on earth.

Jenny says they need to weapon up if they’re all going to fight a demon army, so they visit Hawley. He says that everyone that claims the apocalypse is coming has been wrong, and then it starts hailing blood, which convinces him to help. He gets them the most powerful weapons he has, which are also imbued with magic. In turn, Hawley also has to keep an eye on the Headless Horseman to help prevent demons from letting him out.

Death in Sleepy Hollow

Ichabod, Abbie, Jenny, Katrina, and Irving head out to get Moloch, but his demon army is slowly rising, and they have to fight them. In this action-packed scene, Abbie gets shot in the shoulder, but Irving is able to use the sword and kill several of the demons.

Then the Horseman of War shows up, and Irving uses the sword against him, killing him. Note that this was Henry’s magically imbued armor warrior and not Henry himself. The real Henry is still alive, but it looks like he might not be the Horseman of War anymore since his armor is now “dead.”

They start celebrating the fall of a Horseman when they realize that Irving was also struck in their fight, and Irving dies. This prompts them to rethink their plan since they can’t use the sword without dying, but in the end they’re all willing to sacrifice themselves in order to get the job done.

Surprise, Bitch

Unfortunately for Henry, Moloch wants him to sacrifice himself to get the sword. Henry is confused because he’s the Horseman of War, but Moloch says there were Horsemen before him and there will be Horsemen after. This upsets Henry, but he goes to the church anyway to get the sword for Moloch. Instead of getting the sword, however, he gets a family talk. Ichabod almost kills him with the sword, and Henry traps them in with his magic, informing them that the only option for them to leave is to kill him, but Ichabod says he would rather kill Moloch and let his son go free.

But in a turn of events Henry manages to get the sword, and he can use it without dying, so he forces them to all come to Moloch.

Moloch ties all of them up against trees and tells Henry to sacrifice his mother despite the deal he made with Abraham. Ichabod begs Henry to take him instead, but then Henry surprises everyone and kills Moloch with the sword.
