The Sleepy Hollow season 1 finale left Ichabod, Abbie and the rest of the gang in tough spots all around. We caught up with the cast and show runners of the Fox hit at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con to find out what we can expect when Sleepy Hollow returns in the fall. WARNING: season 1 spoilers ahead!.

Though show runners are keeping tight lipped on specific details regarding Sleepy Hollow, producer Roberto Orci said one thing we can expect is the unexpected. “Because we all thought long and hard about how we wanted to end the season and how we wanted to build it and because we left everyone in this horrible place, we didn’t want to make getting out of those situations easy or expected,” said Orci. “I think what we can promise is that whatever you think is coming next, isn’t coming next.”

Orci also said fans can expect conflict to arise among key players over what to do about how to deal with Henry (John Noble) now that he’s revealed himself to be both Ichabod and Katrina’s son and the horseman of war. “Because he’s got a personal relationship with some of our leads… what that’s gonna bring out in everyone is a lot of conflict about how to solve the problem,” said Orci.

Actress Katia Winter also shed some light as to where season 2 will find Katrina Crane. “She’s obviously got some choices to make,” said Winter. “Obviously Henry is her son and they’re on opposite sides and with Crane even– they’re gonna reunite but there’s gonna be a big rift in our relationship as well.”

Winter also let slip that Katia being stuck with Headless will make for an interesting story arc as well. “Because I’m stuck with him, I’m actually able to converse with him and see him for what he used to be, the spirits within him… that relationship to me is really interesting,” said Winter.

“It’s almost as if she has Stockholm Syndrome,” said actor John Noble in regards to Katrina’s relationship with Headless. “It almost appears that she’s fallen– which works like a dream in the show– and I sort of get involved in that as well.”

Speaking on what spooky things will be coming to Sleepy Hollow this season, Nicole Beharie said we’ll see a few of the characters battling the darkness within themselves. “This year we have this coin that sort of changes and brings out people’s darker sides and inclinations and for me, that’s sort of scarier because you really don’t know what’s going on with people and what they’re capable of than a monster that might cut off your head,” said Beharie. “You might be able to fight it with bullets but if it’s someone that you love, and you find out that they dislike you or that they’re harboring this resentment, what do you do?”

In regards to the coin Beharie spoke of, producer Alex Kurtzman said the idea behind it was inspired by the 30 pieces of silver Judas was allegedly paid to betray Jesus. “We’ve kind of taken that and built in our own Sleepy Hollow mythology around it in which that coin was also what turned Benedict Arnold, and today, is now being turned onto the population,” said Kurtzman.
