Writer and director Drew Goddard has revealed that a Sinister Six film featuring Spider-Man could still be a possibility once Marvel establishes the character in their universe.

Before Sony made a deal with Marvel/Disney to allow Spider-Man to be in their MCU, Goddard was going to direct a Sinister Six film with many of Spider-Man’s villains. While speaking with io9, Goddard said, “My vision of that movie was a summer annual.” This means Spider-Man could be in a Sinister Six film without changing the storyline of Marvel’s new films with Tom Holland in the role.

He continued, “You [wouldn’t] have to worry about continuity. It was just, ‘We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.’ I intentionally wanted a movie that didn’t have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think.”

It’s probably just wishful thinking right now for the writer/director, but with Sony and Disney now working together with Spider-Man, it wouldn’t be a total surprise to see a Sinister Six film as Marvel continues to branch out into new franchises.

Goddard said, “The tricky part about all this is I love this plan. I love that you get to see Spider-Man in Marvel movies. I think that’s a great thing. I’m on board with that decision because as a fan that’s what I want. So who knows what the future holds? This is Hollywood, man, you’ve gotta play the long game.”

Drew has been producing Marvel’s Netflix series Daredevil, which has been very well-received, and it wouldn’t surprise us if Marvel/Disney bring him under their wing with the Spider-Man franchise, since he’s now had some success with them.

Goddard came to fame by serving as a writer and producer of two incredibly popular TV shows, Alias and Lost. He also wrote for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which means he also has ties to someone very important to Marvel (Joss Whedon).

He also directed and wrote Cabin in the Woods with Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon, which made his transition into being hired to work on Marvel’s Daredevil series on Netflix a perfect fit.

When Sinister Six was announced, fans didn’t seem very interested, but Marvel has done an excellent job of turning unknown franchises (Guardians of the Galaxy) into hits, and with Spider-Man being in the film we imagine it could be an interesting move now that Marvel is involved.
