X-Men: Supernova is the rumored title of the next X-Men movie, which will reportedly tackle Jean Grey’s Dark Phoenix storyline.
Not only did X-Men: First Class allow Fox to explore new story lines with familiar characters, it also opened the door for a variety of spinoff films starring the younger cast. One of those characters is Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey.
Collider is reporting on rumors that Simon Kinberg will be directing the next X-Men film, which will focus on Turner’s Phoenix. Speculation has been circling for a while, but apparently Kinberg is now in talks to make his directorial debut with the film.
This film is not to be confused with Josh Boone’s New Mutants. Instead, this will be a followup film starring Sophie Turner and is rumored to be called Supernova. It will focus on the character’s downfall as her Dark Phoenix personality takes over and she succumbs to her powers.
If you’ve watched the original trilogy of films (with Famke Janssen playing Jean), you’ll know how powerful of a mutant she is.
Kinberg has apparently already written the screenplay and is just awaiting approval from Fox, though it’s likely they’ll move forward with the project. As Collider states, Kinberg is basically Fox’s equivalent of Marvel’s Kevin Feige; he has a hand in both the X-Men movies and the developing X-Men television shows, and is an important asset for the studio.
But as Collider emphasizes, just because Kinberg is in talks to direct X-Men: Supernova, this has not been confirmed just yet. Fingers crossed, though — if anyone has the experience and devotion to this franchise that can translate into a stellar film, it’s Kinberg.
